Mothers of children with disabilities in Jagna served by Stimulation and Therapeutic Activity Center (STAC) Satellite 3 bonded themselves together for the Introduction to Disability and Homebound, Instruction for Children with Disabilities - Parents’ Training Program at the Capt. Goyo Caseñas Hall on March 23-24. Organized by Jagna’s non-government organization partner the Breaking Barriers for Children BBC) the said twenty two mothers underwent series of lectures and workshops aimed at making them strong advocates for their own rights as women and of their children with disabilities. The capability building as part of the BBC’s programs and services effected the said mothers to become very important allies of the Katipunan ng May Kapansanan sa Pilipinas (KAMPI Inc., in mobilizing support from the local government units to ensure sustainability of its various efforts. Among the salient points the mothers learned were Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC) discussed by Jagna’s Social Welfare Officer in Charge Ms. Marcionila Reyes and BBC’s social and occupational components to include its home visits, parents counseling, parents meeting, referral to specialists, parents’ capability training programs and occupational therapy. Satellite Physical Therapist in Jagna Mr. Sheldon Garcia talked about the rehabilitation component of BBC especially on physical therapy which he regularly conducts. SPED Coordinator Ms. Evony Montes discussed on the special education component. To recall, LGU-Jagna entered into a memorandum of agreement with BBC on July 24, 2008 with the goal of implementing the BBC Project by establishing a STAC which provides free comprehensive rehabilitation services to children with disabilities aged 0-14 years of age. The services include free physical therapy, occupational therapy, school placement for disabled children, skills trainings for their parents, and medical assistance through referrals to hospitals and other health facilities where these services were needed. |
